Baby massage - brief history and overview
The French doctor, Frederique Leboyer, spent many years in India observing the traditional massages given to children. He introduced this technique to the Western World in the 80’s.
Baby massage is a very gentle way of relaxing both you and your baby. It offers parents the chance to become more confident in handling their child as well as reinforcing the bonding process. For the baby, the gentle stroking encourages good circulation, stimulates the immature immune system, calms emotions and can help relieve the pain of colic.
Two elements are important: time and a quiet environment. You can introduce baby massage as early as 4 weeks. The Indian method suggests gentle strokes towards the heart which is stimulating.
Baby massage courses are the easiest and friendliest way to learn the different techniques. It is more relaxing for the parent too because they have the chance to concentrate fully on the baby. There is no TV, no telephone, and nobody knocking on the door.
You should not massage your baby directly after feeding. If you massage your baby at home, make sure the room is warm and the lights dimmed. A soft towel will make a good mat. In addition, your finger nails should not be too long. Don’t forget to take off rings, bracelets and your watch. Make sure your hands are warm.
Please remember: all babies are different! Some babies can relax for over 30 minutes whilst others have had enough after only 10 minutes. If your baby cannot relax at all, do not be frustrated. This is not about doing anything but relaxing and spending quality time with each other.
